Written Testimony Submitted to the Texas Legislature on Insurance Reform

Share Tweet

The Texas Legislature is grappling with how to address sky-high homeowners and auto insurance rates. Recent hearings in the Senate Business and Commerce Committee and House State Affairs Committee have shown the need for real insurance reform that keeps insurance companies from taking advantage of Texas families.

Our state has a weak "file and use" system where insurers have the upper hand. They can file rates with the Texas Department of Insurance and start using them immediately if they wish, leaving TDI to chase them if the rates are too high. In addition, the insurance lobby pushed through a bad bill in 2017 that makes it harder for you to hold insurance companies accountable in court if they wrongfully deny, delay, or underpay your weather-related claim.

Strong laws are required to keep big insurance companies honest. You can read our written testimony below.
