In the News: Insurance Crisis Hurting Texans

We have been updating you throughout the year on the insurance crisis gripping our state and our nation. Insurance companies have hiked our rates beyond all recognition while slashing our coverage. Recent reporting from around the state digs into the crisis.

Adam Bennett with KVUE reports on the effect of inflation and extreme weather on the price you pay for auto and home insurance. Executive Director Ware Wendell endorsed the state moving to a stronger "prior approval" rating system, stating, “We want to make sure that we’ve got a more efficient system that protects those consumers and stops those overcharges before they happen.”

The Houston Chronicle produced an entire series on the problem and what consumers can do. Megan Kimble takes a deep dive into the factors driving the rate increases, and Claire Goodman gives policyholders practical information on what they can do. Mr. Wendell stated, "It's extremely difficult and complex to shop this insurance market,” Wendell said. “It's really hard to compare apples to apples, because it's apples to oranges, pineapples, cherries — you name it.”

Consumers can look to the HelpInsure.com site as a resource for shopping the Texas insurance market.
